Well, we explained why we call roper boots by the moniker, "roper". So I guess we need to explain why we call these lace up boots "lacers". A boot with laces will generally give much more support to the lower leg than a slip on boot. And every now and then, back when, a cowboy would get used to that support in a work boot and want it in his riding boot too. (Some of us Cowboys didn't know as much about packers from out of the Northwest.) In fact, the predecessor of this lacer, is an English boot, called a paddock boot. It was used when mucking, or cleaning horse stalls. Mostly, I think, because you could wear short pants, and by tying the laces tight, manure would not fall inside the boot so easily. 

So, anyway, cowboys wearing these laced boots got jealous because their boot did not have a "sweet" name like their "roper buddies". So they started with the lacer name. ...A second postulation comes from the stores that sell them. Seems Mommas would come by wanting to get a boot for their cowboy sons. The son's sent their Moms, but didn't exactly describe them other than "work kinda cowboy boots". Well, after Momma has made three trips, she started calling them the "laceup ropers". The name stuck and got abbreviated to lacers.  I understand, from a source that should be somewhat reliable, that this is the truth; or it could be the truth; or even if it isn't, one of these stories should be the truth! - Cultured Cowboy.
